Combined Insurance has been recognized for excellence in its military veteran recruiting and hiring efforts with two recent designations: named a Most Valuable Employer for Military by CivilianJobs.com and awarded Best Military Recruiting Program by Onrec.com.
CivilianJobs.com, which provides services to help American companies find military-experienced talent, recognized Combined Insurance as a Most Valuable Employer for Military based on the company’s recruiting, training and retention efforts that target military veterans for civilian careers.
Similarly, the company was recently awarded Best Military Recruiting Program by leading human resources and recruiting information resource Onrec.com at its annual international recruitment conference, Onrec Expo. The designation recognizes Combined Insurance’s demonstrated recruitment, hiring and retention efforts to embrace service men and women returning to or entering the civilian job market.
Late last year, Combined Insurance, a leading provider of individual supplemental accident, disability, health and life insurance products, hired a U.S. Navy veteran to lead efforts to recruit high-potential candidates transitioning from military service to the private sector. Since then, the company has hired more than 100 military veterans.
"Combined Insurance recognizes the dedication and leadership our service Veterans bring to the workforce, and we reward those skills with a new challenge to embark on," says Joseph Pennington, Navy veteran and head of Combined Insurance’s veteran recruiting efforts.
Besides the addition of Pennington, Combined Insurance established a military veteran council of employees from all areas of the company. “The council reaches out to our new veteran hires and helps mentor them through the transition from a military to civilian professional life,” says Pennington.
Travis Mouser, an account executive with Combined Insurance, joined the company in April 2011 after a nine-year career in the U.S. Air Force. According to Mouser, who was promoted after just nine weeks with the company, his transition from the military to a sales job took some getting used to, but for the most part it has been a good experience. “I believe my success is due to a mix of the time management skills I learned in the Air Force and the support I’ve received from my managers.”
But veterans are not the only ones who are benefitting from the company’s military recruiting program. “Veterans are high potential candidates because they possess the qualities we look for … discipline, ambition, commitment,” says Doug Wendt, president, Combined Insurance. According to Wendt, the program is also a source of pride for the company’s employees. “Our employees are proud of our military recruiting efforts because they help employ those who have selflessly protected our country.”
