Combined Insurance Team Walks with the JDRF Foundation
Combined Insurance is a proud sponsor of the 2016 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) One Walk at Montrose Harbor in Chicago—an event we’ve supported for more than 20 years. We welcome this opportunity to ‘give back’ by raising awareness for Type 1 diabetes in our own community.
A 20 year tradition
A team of Combined Insurance volunteers/walkers gathered Sunday, October 2nd at the Montrose Harbor in Chicago. Aileen Jones, who works in Field Financial Services, has participated in this walk with a team from Combined since she started working for the company over 20 years ago.
“Our continued commitment to JDRF holds true to Mr. Stone’s legacy of philanthropy and his vision of making the world a better place,” Aileen explains, “ We are proud to support an organization that funds life-changing research for Type 1 diabetes—being on the journey with them has been a rewarding experience for me and for all of us at Combined Insurance.”
Combined Insurance has donated over $30,000 to JDRF in the 20 years it has participated in the walk.
Type 1 diabetes (T1D)
Insulin, produced by the pancreas, is an essential hormone that helps muscles absorb sugar in the blood stream and turn it into energy. People who have T1D have pancreases that are not producing enough insulin, and must constantly monitor their blood-sugar levels. When the levels are too high, they inject insulin into their bloodstream through an injection or a pump. They must carefully balance their insulin doses with their eating and activity, and having too much insulin or too little can lead to life-threatening events. Over time, having T1D takes a toll on people’s bodies and cause complications throughout all their major systems.
JDRF is the leading global organization funding research to combat this disease, and Combined Insurance is proud of our long history of participating in this JDRF Walk, which is their flagship fundraising event.
Combined Insurance is actively involved in supporting nonprofits in its communities. Last month a team from the corporate office sponsored and served a free meal to military personnel during the USO No Dough Night at the Great Lakes Naval Station. The company also hosted a Corporate Golf Outing to support the Jason McKie Foundation.
